Legal Eagles? Where's the J-U-S-T-I-C-E?

This advertisement in today's The Star sure puts paid to the myth (debunked many times) that a lawyer is a noble defender of the common people.

Does anybody see the words "justice" or "fairness" or "equality" in here? Where's the love, people?

SMSing while driving

What was so important about that SMS that it couldn't wait? Not even for you to stop at the roadside and then reply? Where was simple common sense, telling you the logical impossibility of driving safely in any manner while trying to type out an SMS on a phone? Did you not think of the consequences of your actions?

My heart goes out to the family of the victims in this tragic accident. But it aches too at the foolishness which caused it, and at how easily this tragedy could have been avoided but wasn't. Life is simply too fragile to waste like this.

Malaysians: Mature Folks or Mollycoddled Babies?

It never ceases to be a source of amusement to me how some folks seem to think that the community needs to be sheltered and mollycoddled from "negative" elements in the media. Take for example calls by a certain party to ban a certain movie due to the fact that they deem it to be offensive to religion. It is not the first time something like this has happened, and I wager, neither will it be the last.

It is time to call into question what right these people have to say what others can or cannot watch. Isn't the average Malaysian mature enough to watch a movie and be able to distinguish between what is real and what is just a work of art or entertainment? Or am I wrong, and we Malaysians DO indeed require an enforced policy of sticking our heads in the sand? Somehow, I don't think so. I have no doubt in my mind that Malaysians are a well regarded lot internationally, and it is unlikely we would have achieved this standing through such narrow-mindedness.

If, theoretically, we conclude that such demands are not meant to the protect the delicate sensibilities of us immature Malaysians, then what is it that motivates such non-tolerance? Could undue pride in religion be the cause of this? This would explain the emotional outburst without facts and condemnation of something which they know nothing off, ie. a movie that hasn't even been released for viewing. Unless this group is a party to piracy and have obtained an unauthorized copy of the film, how would they know what the show is about without even watching it? As a traditional saying goes, "tak kenal, maka tak cinta." A maturity of a person is, after all, reflected in how he or she responds to adversity, if this was in fact an adversity in the first place. Maturity would also give understanding to the fact that pride goeth before a fall.

As it is, we have too many precedents of such xenophobes getting their way in their unreasonable demands. How we handle these people too, will be a mark of our maturity. Even for such small matters. Especially for such small matters. After all, many grains of sand make a beach.

Gawd... 'Tis been a long time... (Annual Reloaded Edition)

Hah! What are the chances of randomly deciding to come back here to blog, then suddenly realizing that I've been gone for exactly ONE year to the day? Almost zero I think. As I write this, it is now the 1st of July 2007. Checking the previous post below in which I unintentionally falsely claimed that I intended to blog more often shows a time stamp of 1st of July 2006. How time has flown...

Well, the DJD's Kennel is open for business once again, after several failed experiments with hosting my own blog. Lesson learned is that it never pays to "ke gauh" (Hokkien for faking cleverness, no relation with "kau geh" which is... nevermind...) and trying to host a website on a 7 year old PC belonging to the scrap heap, a TMNut Streamyx line with 384Kbps upload, and dynamic DNS at a house where the electricity trips every time it storms.

So. I'm back. And gawd, it feels good.

Gawd... 'Tis been a long time...

Hmm.. Now that I've graduated and officially "Contributing to the national unemployment statistic" (IceMilkTea's words), I guess I got a hell lotta more free time to blog. Where to start? Oh heck yeah, lemme explain my long disappearance.

First and foremost was of course the fact that I was busy working on my final year project (a wireless network intrusion detection system), both coding and testing. Everything went smoothly, and most of the things dropped into their proper place. However, there were some minor glitches and bugs which took some time to solve, but solved they were (I think :P). At the end of it all, the VIVA evaluation for the project also went smoother than I could have imagined, though the evaluating lecturer took a good ONE plus hour interrogating me on the fine points of the system. I think I managed to impress him with the system overall, and he gave me an 'A' for my final year project! 9 straight credit hours of 'A' for my GPA. Woot!

Now, the second reason for my disappearance? A one month house hunting spree for a new place to rent. Since all my housemates were gonna leave, I thought I'd better find a new place to stay. To cut a long story short, I finally decided to stay back in the old house with the new batch of students moving in. Why? Well, getting another place wasn't cheaper, and most of the houses here... Well, they're still pretty dumpy, actually. Ah well, and I was lazy to move too. There you go...

Reason number 3 was coz I was studying really damn hard to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate certification exam. After months of procrastinating and all, we finally had to get it over with ('Da Boss was getting impatient). So me and 2 buddies, what did we do?? Hahaha... Let's just say "Veni, Vedi, Vinci" to that. ;-)

一路顺风 by Nicky Wu (吴奇隆)

This is a sadly touching song... The words managing to capture the feeling of the story that the singer is singing, of sorrow and tears that his beloved is leaving, and a thousand words left unsaid...

Goodbye... with the hope that she has better days ahead and a smooth journey in this life...

In which he fell flat on his face...

That's right, I'm back from the E-Genting 2005! From the title you should have a rough idea of what exactly happened up there. It was... hard, to say the least. There were 4 programming questions, with question 1 consisting of 250 points, question 2 with 350 points, question 3 with 100 points and question 4 with 500 points. Yours truly did only manage to comprehend question 3 (the easiest lah!) and attempted only that. I said attempted. Hmm.... Obviously didn't get very far with that...

Anyways, the rest of the team seem to have done better. At least, I think they did not memper-siasueh-kan (in their own words) the university as they completed most of the question they selected. They used the programming language they were most familiar with, which was JAVA, whereas I used my very rusty C/C++. Been doing too much PHP and PERL coding for the last one year. Hmm... Need to retrain if I'm gonna get back to doing coding for my final year project.

Well, whatever happened, it was a hell of an experience for everybody. We may try again next year... And we're gonna be better prepared then. Meanwhile, here are some pics I took while on the way up to Uncle Lim's renowned establishment.

Into the fog...

The highlight of the whole affair (fortunately or unfortunately) was the complementary lunch. It was a buffet free-for-all with the food ranging from deliciously aromatic roast meat of all sorts to masterful renditions of local delights such as chai tau kueh and the melt-in-your-mouth yummalicious teppanyaki...

Buffet extravaganza! This was just taken less than 10 minutes into the meal. Notice the already empty plate on the top left. The full bottom plate was mine. I'd just sat down after getting my first round.

This here was part of my dinner before we left. I lurve the Oreo McFlurry at McDonald's...

5... 4... 3... 2... 1... 0... Houston, we have lift off...

Wrote a low tech and very primitive blog reader greeter on top. Hope to improve it over time. Currently, it tracks users via IP addresses which I get from my StatCounter visitor list. Users are manually identified via IP address and manually added onto the code list when I can guess whose IP is whose. Of course, it doesn't work for people with dynamic IP addresses. Currently identified people are Lerlind and me. Everyone else, please comment when you read my blog, so I can try tracking you.

Okay, I'm bored and am procrastinating from my E-Genting preparations. Let me know if this thang here works...
